Home and the senses

Have a go at moving around the different spaces in your home. Try and think about each space in terms of the different senses:

Looking at things:

what colours, patterns, shapes, textures can you see? What is your favourite colour?

Feeling:

do you have a favourite object or fabric you like to touch? Do you like kneading dough? If you can, describe how you feel right now using a colour or piece of music to describe it.

Listening (outside of you):

Can you hear birds or the wind? Can you hear music? Try recording yourself on your phone and listen to the rhythms in your own voice.

Listening (inside of you):

Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Are you too cold or too hot?

Tasting:

What is your favourite food/drink? Try tasting different herbs, perhaps make a drink and savour the taste.

Smelling:

What is your favourite smell? Try smelling different herbs and spices if you have any at home. If not, smell some coffee or a tea bag – what does it make you think of?

Squeezing, pushing, pulling, moving

(there is some evidence that these kind of movements can be calming): Do you like to use your hands? Try squeezing something – a stress ball, a cold pillow etc. or perhaps pop on some music and dance. You can do this sitting down if you prefer.

Occupational Therapist, Angela, has done a great sensory tour of her flat, watch it here:
